School Holidays? Here's What We Love About Spring in Canberra
We love Spring, and this mild winter means it’s feeling more “spring-like” than ever. The blossoms are out, and we think it’s the best time to visit Canberra with the family — so let us show you why, with our top picks for what to enjoy this Spring.
1. Visit the Four Winds Vineyard Cellar Door! Set amongst the vines with plenty of space, our award-winning cellar door is just 30 minutes from Canberra. We’re serving wood-fired pizzas seven days a week, and there’s a deli fridge if you’re after a little something extra to build your own platter.
2. Floriade Canberra’s celebration of Spring and Australia’s largest flower festival, running 12 September to 12 October. This year’s theme is Feast of Flowers, celebrating the connection between gardens, growing and the table. The Monday after the gates close is the Great Bulb Dig — a chance to buy a bag (funds go to charity) and dig your own bulbs for the garden at home. Our garden has definitely benefited from this opportunity!
3. Treetops Adventure This is something we love doing with our kids. You’re suspended 1–15 metres above the ground amongst the Majura Pines, moving through a series of suspended obstacles and lines — a great way to spend an afternoon.
4. Tulip Top Gardens Just in case you didn’t get enough flowers at Floriade, these privately owned gardens are well worth a visit — a real testament to the hard work and design of the team behind them. Pack a picnic (and a bottle of our Rosé) and settle in for the afternoon. Bring along some Rummikub or similar — it’s a great spot for board games and a picnic in the garden.
5. Stromlo Forest Park For the adventurous, Stromlo is well worth a visit. We love mountain biking, and these world-class trails range from beautifully groomed runs all the way up to gnarly double black descents. Worth dropping into The Handlebar afterwards for a burger.
6. National Gallery of Australia
The NGA is currently showing Arthur Boyd: Tapestries, with weaving workshops running alongside the exhibition that look brilliant for anyone wanting to get hands-on. It’s also worth a visit after hours — Lindy Lee’s Ouroboros sits out the front of the gallery and is beautifully lit up at night, making for a lovely after-hours adventure.
7. She Shapes History Tours
For something a little different, take a walking tour with She Shapes History around the Parliamentary Triangle. It’s a fun, engaging way to connect with Canberra’s history, led by guides who are as knowledgeable as they are entertaining. This is a tour that I have loved and now plan to take my kids along.
