Autumn on full display at Four Winds Vineyard
With Autumn now in full swing here in the Canberra Wine Region, our vineyards have transformed from lush, green vines, into a beautiful palette of reds, oranges, and yellows. But have you ever pondered why and how this happens?
The answer lies in the changing levels of carbohydrates within the grapevine.
During the warmer months, the leaves produce carbohydrates through photosynthesis. These carbohydrates are then transported to the roots and other parts of the plant, helping it to grow and develop.
As the days become shorter and the temperature drops, the grapevine slows down its production of carbohydrates. This causes the leaves to stop producing chlorophyll, the pigment that gives the leaves their green colour. Without chlorophyll, other pigments in the leaves, such as anthocyanins and carotenoids, become more visible, resulting in the vibrant colours of autumn that currently on display.
During the cooler months, the grapevine begins to store the carbohydrates it has produced in its roots and other parts of the plant. This stored energy is what will fuel the vine’s growth and development in the following season.
